CORRECTION: "Avian Dinosaur" is a broader group than I talked about at 2:08. It's a group that includes some pre-bird dinosaurs as well as all modern birds and everything in between.
Most of us learned that dinosaurs went extinct about 66 million years ago when a giant asteroid hit the Earth. But at least three lineages of "avian dinosaur" were able to survive the aftermath of that mass extinction. The ancestors of chickens, the ancestors of ducks, and the ancestors of ratites (ostriches), each survived. The factors that may have assisted their survival is their small size (so they didn't need as much food) and their ability to fly (so they could search for new sources of food). But a lot of luck was also involved, and the history of birds could have been very different if a slightly different set of dinosaurs had survived. Just as an example, there were toothed birds (Enantiornithes) that went extinct in that time. Imagine some birds with beaks, and some with teeth!
I hope this teaches you something new about the dinosaurs alive today - the avian dinosaurs called birds. So at Thanksgiving you could accurately say, "Please pass the dinosaur!"
