There are two types of gorillas: lowland gorillas living in the lowland wet forests of Gabon, Cameroon and the Congo, as well as mountain gorillas. In the very center of the African continent, in the Congo, there is the Virunga massif-a mountain range of volcanic origin that stretches from east to west for a hundred kilometers. The mountains here reach a height of 4000 m and serve as the last refuge for mountain gorillas.

The mountain gorilla is the largest of all monkeys. This is a very tall and massive animal: A male mountain gorilla with a weight of up to 200 kilograms can reach up to 1.80 meters in height in a standing position. Males are twice as heavy as females. By about 12 years of age, the black fur in the back area begins to acquire a silvery color, this is a characteristic feature of more mature and older males. The female mountain gorilla is significantly smaller than the male, reaching a height of 1.5 meters, with a weight of about 100 kilograms. During its lifetime, it can produce from four to six cubs with an interval of 3-6 years.
