Khan Al-Shilan Museum | متحف خان الشيلان

Khan Al-Shilan is one of the important heritage khans in Najaf Governorate. It has been rehabilitated as a heritage museum for the 1920 Revolution and the heritage of the city of Najaf. The building consists of two floors and a basement. Its total area is estimated at about 2000 m2 and its height is 12 m.

The khan contains various heritage items such as weapons, jewelry, and copper household utensils. It contains a special hall (Panorama) that embodies the battle of the 1920 Revolution. The building was a camp for the Ottoman army. After the 1920 Revolution on June 30, 1920, it became a detention center for British prisoners who fell into the hands of the revolutionaries.

Khan Al-Shilan was built and constructed in the late Ottoman Empire in 1899 to host visitors coming to the city of Najaf. However, it did not serve the purpose for which it was built due to the British army taking control of it and making it their headquarters in 1914.

خان الشيلان هو من الخانات التراثية المهمة في محافظة النجف الأشرف، ولقد تم إعادة تأهيله كمتحف تراثي لثورة العشرين وتراث مدينة النجف الأشرف، ويتألف المبنى من طابقين وسرداب، وتقدر مساحته الكلية بحوالي 2000م2 وارتفاعه 12م.

يضم الخان مقتنيات تراثية متنوعة من الأسلحة والحلي والأواني المنزلية النحاسية ويحتوي على قاعة خاصة (بانوراما) تجسد معركة ثورة العشرين، ولقد كان المبنى معسكرا لجيش الدولة العثمانية وبعد قيام ثورة العشرين في 30 حزيران عام 1920 أصبح معتقلا للأسرى الإنكليز الذين وقعوا في قبضة الثوار.

وبني وشيد خان الشيلان في أواخر حكم الدولة العثمانية عام 1899 لأجل استضافة الزوار القادمين إلى مدينة النجف، إلا أنه لم يؤد الغرض الذي بني لأجله بسبب سيطرة الجيش البريطاني عليه واتخاذه مقرا لهم عام 1914
