~Shios An Taigh An Tòrraidh/Down In The Wakehouse~
Down in the wakehouse I met my brownhaired maid.
Her cheeks as red as roses, her lips were sweet as sugar,
Honey lay in the trees and honeycombs were on the branch,
And the king of fish leapt with pleasure that she had taken to me,
Oh, how dear and tuneful sing the birds on the hillock
As I listened to their song about my love for the brownhaired maid;
It was from her I learned of many things of fun and pleasant play-
Oh, how tasty the juice of the barley as I drink and she becomes mine.
I spent a happy day in the glen as I watched the cattle:
Towards me came the young maid with her new attire,
A hat atop and cloak and buckled shoes below-
How comely was the gentle maid, like a guiding star dancing before me.
Rising early Wednesday, I thought the day was so cold;
I recognised my fair love on the path beyond;
I called out to her would we lie a while-
O Lord, how sweet the gift the young maid that has gone from me.
