In this video, we travel to the extreme northern point on mainland Grenada where leatherback turtles nest every year.
Leatherbacks are the largest species of turtles in the world. In Levera, St. Patrick, Grenada, they nest on Levera Beach annually between March and July. The turtles return to nest where they were hatched.
Although there are a few exceptions, the entire process occurs at night. The leatherbacks ascend from the sea and choose a spot to nest. Using their back flippers, they dig nests or egg chambers that are between 18 to 24 inches deep. They deposit the eggs and then cover the chamber. This process is just as fascinating as the digging of the nest with their flippers. They use the front flippers to throw sand backwards towards the nest. Then they employ the back flippers to disperse the sand. They do this until the nest is camouflaged, and then descend to the sea. This process can take up to 1 3/4 hours. It is well worth it.
