AUSTRALIA'S NEWEST LOCOMOTIVES TAKE ON THE OUTBACK - GE C44ACi & C44ESACi Engines built in Australia

Australia’s rail freight operators are investing in a new generation of locomotives. These engines are locally built at UGL Rail’s Broadmeadow facility. The C44ACi and C44ESACi represent the latest in Australian rail engineering, built to handle the nation’s toughest conditions, like the Australian Outback. All three Australian intermodal freight operators use these new locomotives, either under a lease agreement or in full outright ownership.

Aurizon purchased 30 new C44ACi locomotives as part of an expansion of its rail operations following the acquisition of One Rail Australia and it's new Team Global Express Intermodal Services. They've used the new locomotives to completely replace aging CLs & ALFs on Darwin services and also operate new services.

Pacific National ordered 50 new C44ESACi locomotives, with a few already in service. These locomotives use the GE GEVO-12 engine compared to the GE 7FDL-16 used on the C44ACi. These locomotives have been purchased for fleet renewal, with the aging ANs put into storage and the NRs to be relegated to less vital services.

SCT Logistics has not purchased any new Australian built locomotives but has entered a lease agreement with Rail First Asset Management to use six of its newly built CF class locomotives straight off the production line. This lease agreement is expected to be longer term, as SCT struggles with a shortage of locomotives and issues with its first-generation Chinese-built CSR class engines.
