When Louis XIV died in 1715 there was an immediate reaction against the heavy, pompous Baroque art of his reign. In its place came the light, joyous Rococo style characterized by pastel colors and themes of love and fancy. However, by about 1760 the Rococo style began to lose favor as the rumblings leading to the French Revolution started
to be heard. In its place came a renewed interest in the balance and formality of classical times. This talk examines the Rococo style as represented by the works of Boucher and Fragonard and takes you through the Neoclassical period with its main proponent Jacques-Louis David.
