平等院 〜鳳凰堂、平安時代に藤原頼通が地上に極楽浄土を再現するとして建立。ご存知10円玉のデザインの建物です。 [No.103]

ユネスコ世界遺産の平等院は京都の南、宇治エリアに位置し、京都駅から電車で20分です。平等院は10世紀末に貴族の別荘として建てられ、11世紀初頭に藤原頼通が別荘を寺院に改めました。国宝の鳳凰堂は西方極楽浄土をこの世に現すべく1053年に建立され、正面から見た姿が鳳凰が翼を広げたように見えるため、そのように呼ばれています。
隣接する鳳翔館は文化財を最良の状態で保存するために先端技術を用いた第3世代の博物館として2001年に開館しました。国宝である、梵鐘、鳳凰像、２６体の菩薩像など見応えのある展示が魅力です。

Byodo-in, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is located in Uji area, south from Kyoto. It is almost 20 minutes by train from Kyoto Station. Byodo-in was built as an aristocratic villa at the end of the 10th century and Fujiwara Yorimichi changed the villa into a temple later.
‘Hououdo’, a national treasure of Japan, was built in 1053 to create the ‘Jodo’ heaven of Buddhism in this world. It looks like a phoenix with its wings spread when viewed from the front, so it is called the ‘Hououdo’ (the phoenix hall).
‘Hoshokan’ museum was opened in 2001 as a third-generation museum using advanced technology so as to preserve cultural properties in the best condition. There are many spectacular exhibits such as the Bonsho (bell), the phoenix statue, and the 26 Bodhisattva statues, these are national treasures of Japan too.
