Taronga is a proud partner of the world heritage listed Lord Howe Island Rodent Eradication Project, the largest attempt ever undertaken on an inhabited island. We have been responsible for the care of 350 endangered bird species at a specially build rodent proof aviaries on island, which were vulnerable to primary and secondary poisoning during the delivery of the project.
A team of experienced keepers lived onsite for 10 months providing world class care, husbandry and management of the endangered Lord Howe Island Woodhen and Lord Howe Island Pied Currawong.
The birds were successfully release at their wild site of capture at the completion of the project, with post project monitoring showing the bird populations flourishing back in their natural environment.
Taronga specialise in developing and delivering wildlife conservation and recovery projects, with over 30 field projects working to achieve significant conservation outcomes, to secure a future for wildlife.
