My worms are quite the gossip-y gals, as they live for the tea. Worm tea and worm leachate are both liquid byproducts of vermicomposting, but they differ in their composition and usage, so let’s dig into the differences.
Worm tea is a liquid fertilizer that is created by steeping worm castings in water. It involves actively aerating the mixture, which promotes the growth of beneficial microorganisms present in the castings. The resulting liquid is rich in nutrients and beneficial microorganisms. Worm tea can be applied directly to plants as a foliar spray or used to water plants at the root zone. It acts as a natural fertilizer, providing essential nutrients and promoting healthy plant growth.
Worm leachate, on the other hand, is a liquid that drains or leaches out from the bottom of a worm bin or compost pile. It is a passive process and does not involve actively aerating the liquid. Worm leachate is a mixture of excess moisture and organic matter that has passed through the worm bedding. Unlike worm tea, which undergoes a controlled process to enhance beneficial microorganisms, worm leachate may contain a wider range of microorganisms, including both beneficial and potentially harmful ones.
Due to its potential variability and the possibility of harmful pathogens, it is generally recommended to exercise caution when using worm leachate.
You can absolutely experiment with using diluted worm leachate in your garden, but it isn’t worth it to me so I choose not to. #wormcomposting #wormleachate #wormtea #naturalfertilizer #gardeneducation #composting101 #learntocompost #beginnergardenertips
