Kaizer Chiefs head into the January window knowing they can’t afford another quiet transfer period. The first half of the Betway Premiership has exposed gaps in the squad, and with senior players fading and a few youngsters still far from ready, Amakhosi simply have to strengthen in key areas.
Below are the three positions the club must address — urgently.
1. A New Left-Back to Compete With Bradley Cross
Cross is doing a respectable job filling in at left-back, but Amakhosi need real competition and balance in that role.
Paseka Mako, an experienced head, is sadly showing that the legs are no longer responding the way they used to. Nkanyiso Shinga was brought in as the long-term solution, yet his arrival hasn’t worked out — a failed signing the club must now plan around.
A modern Chiefs left-back needs recovery pace, consistent delivery, and the confidence to defend large spaces. Cross can’t carry that responsibility alone.
2. A Box-to-Box Midfielder in the Lebohang Maboe Mould
In the middle of the park, Lebohang Maboe has quietly taken Sibongiseni Mthethwa’s place with energy, range, and intelligent forward runs. Chiefs need another midfielder of that profile — someone who can run, pass, intercept, tackle, and still get into the final third.
A proper box-to-box engine changes everything:
• It breaks lines without compromising defensive structure.
• It allows the No. 10 to push higher.
• It frees midfielders from being stuck in one gear.
Without that all-action presence, Chiefs often look predictable and flat. January must fix that.
3. An Attacking Midfielder With Experience and Goals
Mduduzi Shabalala is talented, brave and improving — but he cannot yet carry the weight of creating and scoring every week. Chiefs desperately need an attacking midfielder with goals in his boots: someone who has been around the block, understands pressure, and can win tight games with one moment of real quality.
Amakhosi’s biggest problem remains chance creation and final-third maturity. An older, battle-tested No. 10 would immediately raise the team’s floor and ceiling.
Strengthening these three positions could transform Chiefs’ second half of the season. The squad is close, but January will show whether the club is serious about competing again.
