Flemish singer Eric De Clerk adopted the stage name 'Ricky Gordon', performed Dutch schlager songs, but in 1974 changed to rock 'n' roll, and "Such A Night" became his first hit: a Top 10 hit in both Flanders and the Netherlands.
On September 28, 1974, Radio Veronica's "Alarmschijf" (Alarm Disc) went to Ricky Gordon's "Such a Night." The song was written by Lincoln Chase. Belgian Ricky Gordon was born Eric de Clerk. He was discovered in 1970 by Sylvain Tack, who had launched the record label Start just a year earlier. Initially, Ricky Gordon wrote Flemish-language songs, but from 1974 onward, he focused on English-language music. "Such a Night" was the first result of this. Ricky's performance was a cover version of a 1953 Clyde McPhatter & The Drifters song.
It's interesting to note that Sylvain Tack had become the owner of Radio Mi Amigo in 1974. "Such a Night" was therefore heavily promoted on this station. On June 15, 1974, the song was voted "Lievering" (Darling), the Belgian equivalent of the "Alarm Disc," on Radio Mi Amigo. In Belgium, the song reached number two. A few months later, Ricky Gordon reached number 5 in the Dutch Top 40.
"Such a Night" has been covered by many artists, including Elvis Presley, Cliff Richard, The Hepstars, Shaking Stevens, and Barry Hay & JB Meijers.
