I made this Hīnaki (eel trap) today and I'm just testing it. Seems to work. The eels I caught were released as soon as it was clear they couldn't find their way out.
This trap is going to be used to help transfer migrating eels past a dam in autumn. There's a few changes to be made but its a good start.
