In the 1970s, Amtrak was desperate to modernize. American trains were slow, heavy, and obsolete. France, however, was building the future.
So, Amtrak imported the French Turboliner.
These weren't normal trains. They were powered by Helicopter Gas Turbines. . They were designed to cruise at 125 MPH, offering a smooth, "Jet Age" experience for passengers.
But there was a catch. These delicate, high-tech machines were designed for pristine European railways. When they hit the neglected, bumpy tracks of the American Midwest, the dream fell apart.
And then, the Oil Crisis struck.
This is the story of how America bought a fleet of gas-guzzling jet trains right before fuel prices tripled, and how New York State wasted nearly $200 million trying to resurrect them decades later.
In this video: 🇫🇷 The Tech: How the Turbomeca helicopter engine was adapted for the rails. ⛽ The Crisis: Why gas turbines are terrible when oil prices go up. 📉 The Failure: Why "High Speed" trains can't run on "Low Speed" tracks. 💸 The Scandal: The $185 million project to rebuild trains that never ran.
