Bitores Mendez Combat Knife Only - Professional/No Damage

Mendez usually isn't an issue no matter what kind of run you do, which is why I haven't covered him often at all. This is largely true for knife only, but the second phase presents exactly one issue. Dodging his barrel throws is not the most intuitive thing in the world. It's clear that the intention is for you to shoot them. They can be narrowly avoided by timing when to climb the ladder. The idea is to climb up before he throws the barrels. It's simple in theory, but in practice it is a little tricky. There is no easy way to for me to describe. You kind of have to feel out when he locks onto your position and then climb up. Do it too early and the attack will track you up the ladder. To further complicate things, the timing changes once Mendez takes enough damage and starts speeding up. The best advice I can offer is to pan the camera and carefully watch Mendez when he starts the barrel attack. It has quite a bit of startup to it, so in most cases you should have the time to do this. When it looks like he is about to throw, climb the ladder. How often he uses this attack seems to be random. My successful attempt prior to this one had Mendez using the barrels only a single time. I wasn't happy with that, so I played until I got this attempt where he used it three times.

That's basically all there is to worry about. The first phase is completely free. Just stay close to him and crouch before he tries to grab you. Move out of the way if he is doing the slam attack. If he is doing the big spin attack, climb a ladder. That's all there is to it. Aside from the barrels, every attack in the second phase is easy to dodge. You don't have a lot of opportunities to attack Mendez due to needing him to be at close range. Thankfully once he is in range, there is little he can do to actually harm you. The fire is more of a problem than he is, but it's still not that big of a deal. Knife durability won't be a problem either as long as you don't go for more than two knife prompts. Using the knife prompt on the first phase does seem to end that phase faster, but I'm not sure how much it impacts the second phase. I also got stuck behind Mendez the first time he fell down. I was unable to get the knife prompt despite trying for it. Anyway, you can get like 20+ stabs in before activating the prompt. It's definitely important for maximizing the damage you can inflict before he recovers.
