▪ High blood pressure, also called hypertension, is blood pressure that is higher than normal. The higher your blood pressure levels, the more risk you have for other health problems, such as heart disease, heart attack, and stroke. Hypertension is a major cause of premature death worldwide.
▪ Primary, or essential, high blood pressure is the most common type of high blood pressure. Risk factors for hypertension include unhealthy diets, physical inactivity, consumption of tobacco and alcohol, and being overweight or obese.
▪ Common symptoms of hypertension include early morning headaches, nosebleeds, irregular heart rhythms, vision changes, and buzzing in the ears. Severe hypertension can cause fatigue, nausea, vomiting, confusion, anxiety, chest pain, and muscle tremors.
▪ There are three main classes of medication that are usually in the first line of treatment for hypertension: 1. Calcium Channel Blockers (CCB) 2. Angiotensin Converting Enzyme inhibitors (ACE inhibitors or ACE-I) and Angiotensin Receptor Blockers (ARBs) 3. Diuretics.
