Built in the 8th century by Guru Padmasambhava (also known as Guru Rinpoche), it’s considered older than Samye Monastery in Tibet, making it one of the oldest active Buddhist monasteries in the Himalayas
According to legend, it was constructed over the heart of a defeated demon, symbolizing spiritual triumph. The name “Lo Gekar” means “pure virtue,” blending regional and spiritual meaning (“Lo” = ancient name of Mustang region; “Gekar” = pure virtue)
• Ghar Gumba = Lo Gekar Monastery: Built in the 8th century by Guru Padmasambhava.
• Claims status as one of the oldest Himalayan monasteries, older than Samye in Tibet.
• Located near Charang/Marang village, about 3,930 m elevation.
• Rich in ancient murals, statues, and manuscripts, and viewed as spiritually powerful.
• Can be visited by trekking or jeep tour, with best seasons Spring, Monsoon window, and Autumn.
• Permits required, and the region remains remote and spiritually profound.
