In 1948, eight Black men made history as Atlanta’s first Black police officers. Their hiring was a landmark moment driven by community organizing and the leadership of John Wesley Dobbs, but it came with deep limitations under segregation.
Barred from precincts, disarmed, and restricted from policing white communities, these officers found both support and a home base at the Butler Street YMCA. This video explores their struggle, their courage, and how the YMCA became a foundation for change in Atlanta.
This story is part of Atlanta History Center’s ongoing work to share stories that shaped our city and our nation.
