⚓️Rookie Sailor’s First Test on a Giant Great Lakes Ship!

Join me as we explore what it’s like to be a rookie sailor on a 1000-foot Great Lakes freighter. I had the chance to interview a fellow Boat Friend and brand-new crew member (Adam) just a few days into his job with American Steamship Company on the Burns Harbor, and he shares his exciting first impressions of life on board. From learning about the ship departing Sturgeon Bay to what it was like arriving at the Soo Locks for the first time, Adam gives us an inside look at his experiences, including the meals he’s been eating and even an incredible photo he captured of a lightning strike from his cabin window during a storm on the water.

The Burns Harbor made its first of the new season arrival on 3-31-2025 in Duluth, Minnesota, passing under the iconic Duluth Aerial Lift Bridge as it heads to load taconite (iron ore pellets). You’ll also see footage of wild Lake Superior conditions just days before, including a surfer catching some waves!
