This version of the game was only released in Japan, and was available in a special pack which also included SEGA Rally 2006. From what I've read this version is arcade perfect? Certainly leaps and bounds over the Saturn and PC versions graphically, but it lacks the multiplayer mode.
For this playthrough I'm using the alternate version of the Celica. To access this car, highlight championship at the mode select screen and hold down the brake button, then press accelerate. Highlight the car you want and then shift gears from 1 to 4 (press R2 four times) and you should hear a noise. Then press accelerate again and release brake.
The alternate version of the car has better speed, but the handling is completely different. Turning the car is much harder. Overall it's still easier to finish the game using the alternate car, I found.
