My God, my God, why have You forsaken me?
Why so far from saving me, from my words of groaning?
I cry by day, O God, but You do not answer,
And by night, but I find no rest.
[Chorus 1]
Yet You are holy, enthroned on praises of Israel.
In You our fathers trusted, and You delivered them.
They cried out to You and were set free,
They trusted You — and were not ashamed.
[Verse 2]
But I am a worm and not a man,
Despised and scorned by all who see me.
They mock and shake their heads at me:
“He trusts in the Lord — let the Lord deliver him!”
[Chorus 2]
Yet You brought me from the womb,
You made me trust at my mother’s breast.
From birth I was cast upon You, O God,
From my mother’s womb, You have been my God.
[Bridge 1]
Be not far from me, for trouble is near,
And there is no one to help.
Many bulls surround me,
Strong ones encircle me.
[Verse 3]
They open wide their mouths at me,
Like roaring lions tearing prey.
I’m poured out like water, my bones are out of joint,
My heart is like wax — it melts away.
[Bridge 2]
My strength is dried like broken clay,
My tongue clings to the roof of my mouth.
You lay me in the dust of death,
Dogs surround me — the wicked encircle me.
[Verse 4]
They pierced my hands and feet,
I can count all my bones.
They stare and gloat over me,
Dividing garments, casting lots for my clothes.
[Final Chorus / Prayer]
But You, O Lord — be not far off,
O my Strength, come quickly to help me.
Deliver my life from the sword,
My soul from the jaws of the dogs.
(Instrumental outro — violin and harp fade into silence)
