房玉麟是一名65岁的京剧演员，现在在纽约的一所美甲店工作，帮人做甲修脚。他目睹了京剧这一中国经典舞台表演艺术在过去半个世纪的兴衰流变：从文革时期的破坏，到现代中国社会变革中的被排挤，被边缘化，这种师徒相传的伟大技艺已日渐式微。房玉麟觉得自己的技艺随着年龄的增长正在衰退，又后继无人，因而忧心忡忡。 2012年6月24日，他组织他的剧组做了一次京剧表演。虽然他知道自己剧组的演员们都已无心演出，他依然动用自己所有的技能和魅力去激励团员们与自己完成这场演出。虽然粗糙，但上台表演，能让他找回舞台明星的感觉。他情不自禁地全身心投入到这场表演。他深知自己孩童时学习京剧的那个时代已经一去不复返了，但他仍然以自己的荣耀和尊严来完成他毕生的使命——在纽约进行京剧表演。
