Let's talk about the Dusun language
Dusun Language:
Central Dusun, locally known as Boros Dusun or Bunduliwan, is an Austronesian language spoken predominantly by the Dusun and Kadazan peoples in the Malaysian state of Sabah. It is considered highly mutually intelligible with Coastal Kadazan, with many viewing both as dialects of the same language. The standardized form of the language, now referred to as Kadazandusun, is based on the Bundu-Liwan dialect, chosen for its wide mutual intelligibility. Suppressed during the assimilation policies of the 20th century, Kadazandusun was later revitalized through the efforts of cultural associations. It is written in the Latin alphabet using 21 letters, known as Pimato, and features distinct diphthongs and vowel sequences. The language consists of three main dialect groups—Liwanic, Bunduic, and Ulu Sugut—all of which remain fully intelligible with each other.
Dusun People and Culture:
The Dusun people, together with the Kadazan, form one of the largest indigenous groups in Sabah, Malaysia. Traditionally agrarian, the Dusun have long been rice cultivators, and their social and spiritual life revolves around rice cultivation and harvest festivals such as Kaamatan. Though many are now Christians or Muslims, traditional beliefs involving nature spirits and ancestor worship still influence cultural practices. Dusun society places strong emphasis on community, hospitality, and oral tradition. Despite the pressures of modernization and assimilation, Dusun cultural identity remains vibrant, sustained through music, dance, traditional attire, and renewed efforts in language preservation and education.
