Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's encounter with Afzal Khan is a significant event in Indian history, showcasing Shivaji's military acumen and strategic prowess.
In 1659, Afzal Khan, a general of the Adil Shahi dynasty of Bijapur, was sent to subdue Shivaji. The two leaders agreed to meet at the Pratapgad Fort for a negotiation. However, Shivaji anticipated treachery and prepared accordingly.
Before the meeting, Shivaji equipped himself with a hidden armor under his traditional attire, including a "wagh nakh" (tiger claw) — a weapon designed for close combat. When they met, Afzal Khan attempted to embrace Shivaji as a sign of goodwill, but this was part of his strategy to attack. As Afzal Khan closed in, Shivaji struck with his hidden weapon, catching him by surprise.
In the ensuing struggle, Shivaji managed to fatally wound Afzal Khan. The general's forces, seeing their leader defeated, were demoralized, and Shivaji's troops capitalized on this, leading to a significant victory for Shivaji Maharaj.
This event solidified Shivaji's reputation as a formidable leader and strategist in the face of overwhelming odds.
