There are two names used to refer to many Native Americans from Upstate New York. One is the traditional name in their Native language. The other is a term coined by French settlers in the 1600s, developed as they interacted with Native American tribes in the Northeast. Onondaga storyteller Perry Ground explains the difference, and why the distinction is important.
