Performed 12/28/22 at Holy Hill basilica, conducted by Johanna Anderson.
Vaughan Williams was an English composer of symphonic band music, opera, ballet, chamber music, vocal and orchestral music. In a lecture delivered a year before his death, he commented that “vital art must spring from its own soil”, and many of his works are based on traditional folk songs and carols of England. This setting uses three of the English carols that Vaughan Williams collected, arranged, adapted or harmonized: “Forest Green” based on “O Littler Town of Bethlehem”, “Wassail Song”, and “Sussex Carol”, also known as “On Christmas Night”. This 1999 arrangement is by composer and arranger Douglas Wagner, a native of Chicago.
