We're checking out the Anodized Brown Distortion, from One Control. Bjorn Juhl is at the helm of the Anodized Brown, and he designed the circuit as an exploration of distorted tone, as well as an exercise in re-establishing distortion pedals to their former glory. He realized that great distorted tone goes beyond slamming the front end of your amp with gain, and instead needs to be realized before your signal hits the tubes. Rather than creating the front end of an amp, Bjorn sought to create the preamp and the power amp in the same pedal, creating an all-in-one amp in a box that provides you with a plethora of distortion options. High-output tube amps all feature a familiar touch response, as well as a high dynamic range, and the Anodized Brown has both in spades. The gain range of the pedal swings from 26 to 60 decibels, for a natural sounding distortion at both ends. With the Gain knob set low, you can achieve a lightly pushed amp tone with ease, without any unnatural artifacts or unwanted crispiness. A well-balanced Tone control dials in the right amount of brightness, while phasing out flubby low end or trebly buzz, keeping the Anodized Brown tight and focused no matter what. The Anodized Brown accepts as low as 6 and as high 18 volts, for a variac-like effect that increases as the voltage is lowered, and it also accepts a battery for the ultimate grab-and-go dirt section.
