Step inside the breathtaking Engelbrekt Church, a spectacular masterpiece of early 20th-century Art Nouveau architecture located in Stockholm. Inaugurated in 1914, the church is the crowning achievement of architect Lars Israel Wahlman, who designed not only the soaring structure but also the altarpiece, baptismal font, church silver, and textiles, ensuring a complete and authentic artistic vision.
Often dubbed the "Mountain Church," Engelbrekt is dramatically built upon the old Kvarnberget, with Wahlman conceiving it as a powerful 'church of the Sermon on the Mount.' Prepare to be awed by the immense, 32-metre-high vault—the highest in all of Scandinavia—which rests on eight pillars, each inscribed with one of the 'eight beatitudes.'
The commitment to Art Nouveau principles is evident in the rich authenticity of the materials. The hand-hewn granite walls are alive with symbolic ornamentation, a testament to the period's love for imaginative forms. Inside, the decorative work is equally impressive, featuring a striking choir painting by Olle Hjortzberg, stucco reliefs by Tore Strindberg, and lime paintings by Filip Månsson.
Don't miss the enormous stone altar with its carved granite plinth, adorned by seven round silver shields representing the clouds of heaven. The church also boasts a massive organ gallery and the magnificent Grönlund organ, featuring an incredible 86 stops and 6,212 pipes. With a capacity for 1,000 seated visitors today, this iconic Stockholm landmark remains an essential example of Swedish architectural and artistic heritage.
