Los Angeles once had the largest urban rail system in the world, but mid-20th century policies prioritized cars and freeway expansion over public transit. As a result, 77% of residents drive to work today, and the city faces some of the worst traffic congestion in the world. Despite a $9 billion annual transit budget, public transportation remains underused due to limited coverage, safety concerns, and unreliable service. In this video, I’m exploring how Los Angeles became so car-dependent, what the city is doing to fix it, and whether or not we’re in too deep to revive LA’s golden age of transit.
