OHSOTO'KINO: Warscout on Spreading the Spirit of the Drum

Recipients of NMC’s OHSOTO’KINO Recording Bursary, Warscout, discuss the healing power of the drum, the differences between recording and performing music, and their upcoming Christmas album with David McLeod, Chair of NMC’s National Indigenous Programming Advisory Committee.

Established in 2006 and respected across the Powwow Trail, Warscout consists of singers from Sweetgrass First Nation in Saskatchewan, Maskwacis and Saddle Lake First Nation in Alberta, and the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina. The group combines tradition and fresh style with contemporary singing rooted deeply in the spirit of the drum.

With support from TD, National Music Centre (NMC) is creating more opportunities for Indigenous artists through the OHSOTO’KINO initiative. OHSOTO’KINO is an Indigenous programming initiative focusing on three elements: creation of new music in NMC’s recording studios, artist development through a music incubator program, and exhibitions via the annually updated Speak Up! gallery.
