Come along with me for a walk amongst the giant redwood trees at Muir Woods National Monument! Muir Woods is a peaceful, scenic, forested park in Marin County, just a few miles north of San Francisco, known for its majestic, old-growth coast redwood trees. It is part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.
Muir Woods preserves one of the last remaining ancient redwood forests in the Bay Area. Some redwoods are up to 1,000 years old and over 250 feet tall. It was established on January 9, 1908, when President Theodore Roosevelt declared it a National Monument, thanks to a land donation by William Kent. It was named after conservationist John Muir.
Muir Woods features six miles of trails, including boardwalk and paved paths, as well as longer trails extending into Mount Tamalpais State Park. Many canyon floor trails are wheelchair accessible. The park is open every day of the year, usually from 8:00 AM until approximately sunset.
If you plan to visit, reservations are required for all vehicles and shuttle riders to help manage visitor levels and protect the park's resources. You can make reservations at GoMuirWoods.com or by calling 1-800-410-2419.
