Hiking Mt. Chokai | One of the Most Sacred Mountains in Japan

Mt. Chokai is located on the border between Akita and Yamagata prefectures. It's the 2nd highest mountain in Tohoku, and a sacred place of devotion to Yamabushi practitioners of Shugendo. I took the west approach with the Sea of Japan at my back, the Hokodate trailhead. (Location: https://goo.gl/maps/jyMtVEeLkdHFsBfY6)

There are multiple lodges and places where you can spend the night both at the bottom of the trailhead, and a short hike up it. This is one of many trails up Mt. Chokai - and I plan to explore the others when I can!
