Ladder Recovery at the Tilly Foster Iron Mine

When the pontoon platform suddenly sank on March 14th, 2025, it took down much with it, including the relatively new stainless steel dive ladder. The platform initially went vertical, crushing the ladder into the wall of the mine, before flipping over, upside down, as it sank to 170'. There was much damage to the ladder itself, but still was salvageable. There were three dives, first to survey, the second to begin to unscrew the hardware, the final was to pound out stubborn bolts with wreck hammer and send it up on lift bags to the surface. Two each 40 minute bottom time dives were done in order to do this, along with the 15 minute survey. The ladder was jammed up with the heavily damaged jon boat, electrical cord as well. Difficult to liberate it from the platform itself. The ladder is currently at the manufacturer, who remarked he had never seen a more damaged ladder in his career.
