Internationalization for the End of the World as We Know It
In this paper, I consider possible futures of internationalization in the context of today’s many overlapping global crises. I argue that how one conceptualizes these crises will inform distinct approaches to internationalization. I emphasize the generative possibilities offered by a decolonial approach to internationalization, and propose the need to imagine internationalization ‘otherwise’ in the face of unprecedented challenges. In doing so, I also emphasize the difficulty of imagining otherwise without reproducing harmful colonial patterns. Thus, I ask what kind of education could prepare us to disinvest from the comforts and securities offered by the inherently violent and unsustainable modern/colonial global system, and to develop the intellectual, affective, and relational capacities we will need in order to face ‘the end of the world as we know it’ with generosity, humility, maturity, and responsibility.
