HDR-PQ and Canon Log Video on the EOS R5 - EOS R5 Tip 87

In this video, I break down how Canon’s EOS R5 handles its video gamma settings, including Canon Log and HDR PQ. Unlike newer models like the R5 Mark II and Cinema EOS cameras, the original R5 doesn’t have a centralized way to control all of these settings. Moreover some settings, like compression format, bit depth and chroma sub-sampling change depending on the gamma curve you select.

I’ll look at the differences between BT.709, PQ (Perceptual Quantization), and Canon Log, explaining where each is useful and how the camera switches encoding formats behind the scenes.

I dive into HDR PQ first, showing how to enable it, and how doing so effects the camera’s operation. PQ is best for users who want HDR output without significant post-production.

Then I move to Canon Log, looking at how to enable it and the various settings that affect it.

Finally, I cover the various log adjustments like View Assist, Color Matrix, sharpening, saturation, hue, and color space. I explain when to use BT.709, BT.2020, or Canon Cinema Gamut. Whether you’re grading in post or delivering HDR directly, knowing how to configure these settings will help you get the best results from your R5.
