What is Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy

This video reviews hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. It's perfect for patients, medical students, resident physicians, or anyone interested in learning about cardiology. You’ll see what an ECG, echo, and MRI of a patient with HCM looks like so you can see what I’m talking about. You can see the histological myofibril disarray seen under microscopy that can be the source of fibrosis and sudden cardiac death. I review images of the different subtypes of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) including basal septal hypertrophy, apical HCM, and concentric HCM as well as the medications that we use to manage HCM including beta blockers (propranolol, metoprolol), calcium channel blockers (verapamil, diltiazem), the class IA antiarrhythmic medication disopyramide, and a new to market and first in its class medication mavacamten (Cameos), a cardiac myosin inhibitor. I also explain the wide array of phenotypes and other abnormalities seen in HCM including mitral valve and papillary muscles abnormalities. As most medical students know, this includes systolic anterior motion of the mitral valve (i.e. SAM). I also review family and genetic screening in HCM, genetic mutations responsible for HCM, indications for ICD in HCM, anticoagulation in HCM with atrial fibrillation (AF), surgical myectomy, alcohol septal ablation, and the Bruchen-Barough-Morrow sign.
