Uruguay is the most prosperous and progressive country in South America, and has recently been featured on several lists of top destinations for expats. We went there expecting to see a high standard of living across the board. But what surprised us was that we saw a lot of economic disparity and homelessness in Montevideo. Punte del Este, on the other hand, is a completely different reality: dubbed "The Monaco of South America", it is definitely upscale and reminiscent of rich coastal areas of Florida, like St. Petersburg or Sarasota.
