Cloud Peak Skyway Scenic Byway in Wyoming is a 47-mile stretch of US Highway 14 through the Bighorn Mountains. The byway is known for its gorgeous views of the Bighorn Mountains, the Cloud Peak Wilderness, and steep walls of Ten Sleep Canyon with its high colorful cliffs. The Cloud Peak Skyway Scenic Byway travels up to 9,666 feet at Powder River Pass and offers numerous stops for travelers to admire the landscape. The byway is a paved two-lane highway and is a popular route through the southern Bighorn Mountains.
Bighorn National Forest is located in north-central Wyoming and is one of the oldest government-protected forest lands in the United States. Established in 1897, the Bighorn National Forest encompasses over 1.1 million acres. The forest is primarily lodgepole pine, along with several species of spruce, fir, and aspen. Mammals in the Bighorn National Forest include black bears, elk, moose, cougars, coyotes, mule deer and pronghorn.
The Bighorn Mountains extend 120 miles from southern Montana across north-central Wyoming. Varying in width between 30 and 50 miles, the Bighorn Mountains rise abruptly from the surrounding plains. The highest peaks within the Bighorns are Cloud Peak at 13,175 feet and Black Tooth Mountain at 13,005 feet. The Cloud Peak Wilderness is a centerpiece of a roadless stretch of land at around 189,000 acres, most of which is above the tree line.
