When it comes to filming, the urge to jump headlong into the creative portion can be strong, but it’s absolutely crucial to remember that planning the logistics of a shoot can be just as important as anything else. As the head of a project, you are in charge of making sure everyone on your team , from actors to film crew, knows what they are responsible for. Make lists of everything that needs to be done and who is responsible so when the time comes to start filming you have a clear mind to focus on your creativity on without getting distracted.

Creative License host and veteran filmmaker Josh Apter recommends keeping lists of every detail from equipment checks to schedules to contact lists. As he puts it, taking care of all of the left-brain tasks clears the way for right-brain creativity. This way you are prepared for anything and won’t be derailed by something as mundane as ordering lunch for your team or as crucial as charging your equipment. There are many different ways to do this, the most obvious being putting pen to paper, but for larger jobs it may be in your best interest to look into project management tools. Google Drive is a great tool that you can use to share documents, uploads and lists with your team. More specialized software and apps like Slack are great for communication and helping to organize specific teams for tasks. Asana is another great option, with the ability to make in-depth to-do lists that can be assigned to people’s calendars with alerts. All of this may seem like more work than necessary but being unprepared and unorganized can cause unneeded stress, waste money or even kill a project.
