Fa parte di una serie di Ritratti ‘silenziosi’, che produco a partire dal 2005 (sino ad ora ho realizzato centosettantadue Ritratti e la serie continua ad accrescersi). Ai protagonisti, i più svariati per mestiere ed età, chiedo di posare per circa dieci minuti, senza parlare né agire. Trascorso tale tempo registro i loro commenti sull’esperienza appena vissuta. Ma l'idea di base è quella cha i volti 'parlino' da soli. Con le persone che ci guardano dallo schermo si può anche dialogare: i Ritratti in video inducono infatti a stabilire una conversazione silenziosa, ideale con i soggetti ritratti, accompagnata dai soli suoni dello spazio circostante. Guardando i personaggi filmati in assenza di parole – sebbene di ciascuno si possano soltanto immaginare i pensieri e le reazioni –, si palesa in maniera sottile la loro individualità, mentre al contempo le figure che ci “osservano”, ci portano a volgere lo sguardo all’interno di noi stessi. È un’occasione per avvicinarsi al loro spirito e al nostro, per soffermarci, per pensare, per percepire i nostri valori più profondi. Le persone ritratte ci sono accanto anche se ci occupiamo d’altro, e alla fine, ascoltando le loro considerazioni, usciamo dall’incanto di questi taciti colloqui.
Monto i Ritratti singolarmente o a gruppi, associati per affinità di varia natura. In quest’ultimo caso faccio scorrere i ritratti consecutivamente (o, in alcuni casi, simultaneamente).
Ogni Ritratto singolo o gruppo di Ritratti è da proiettare a ciclo continuo su un diverso schermo in modo sfalsato. Vanno proiettati vari Ritratti o gruppi di Ritratti contemporaneamente su più schermi nel medesimo ambiente o in ambienti contigui.
I luoghi dove proiettarli possono essere i più svariati, così come le misure degli schermi, a seconda delle occasioni e delle situazioni.

The Portrait 11 of Isabella Mosca Ducrot was shot on the 16th of December 2005 in Rome, where she lives and works.

It is part of a series of ‘silent’ film Portraits, shot in real time from 2005 to date (up to now I produced one hundred and seventy-two Portraits, and the number continues to grow). I ask people of different ages and professions, to pose for about ten minutes without speaking or acting. After this time, I record their comments about what they have just experienced. But the basic idea is that the faces ‘speak’ for themselves. With the people looking at us from the screens there can also be a dialogue: in fact the Portraits inspire a silent conversation with the subjects portrayed, accompanied only by the sounds of the surrounding space. Looking at the characters filmed without words – even though one can only imagine their thoughts and reactions –, their individuality reveals itself in a subtle way, the figures who ‘observe’ us, lead us to turn the gaze upon ourselves internally. It is an opportunity to get close to their spirit and to our own, to linger, to think, to perceive our deepest values. The people portayed are close to us even if we are doing something else, and finally, listening to their observations, we come out from under the spell of these silent exchanges.
I edit each portrait separately. Sometimes I edit them in groups, according to different sorts of affinities. In this case I make them run either one after the other or one next to the other simultaneously. The single Portrait or groups of Portraits should be shown on different screens, and should not start at the same time. The final effect should be that of a certain number of portraits or groups of portraits running together on different screens in the same room.
