The Monte Palace Madeira - Tropical Garden is located in a prime setting with breathtaking views over the Bay of Funchal. This destination is where natural beauty and cultural richness meet in perfect harmony. This garden, which extends over 70,000 square metres, offers visitors a unique experience, combining the diversity of native and exotic flora with art and history in one place.
Monte Palace has a long and illustrious history, dating back to the 18th century when the British Consul Charles Murray transformed the property around Monte Church into a leisure estate, which later became known as 'Quinta do Prazer'. In 1897, Alfredo Guilherme Rodrigues transformed the property into a hotel, inspired by the palaces on the banks of the River Rhine. He built a palatial house that was later transformed into the Monte Palace Hotel.
The Monte Palace Madeira Garden now displays some 100,000 plant species from all over the world. From different eras and geographic locations, this space displays stonework, several Buddhist sculptures, stone lanterns or a famous collection of tiles (15th-20th century). In addition, the Monte Palace Madeira Garden is home to a rich fauna, with majestic swans, peacocks and the Asian Koi fish.
