In about 1987 I built a 1 inch belt grinder powered with a used clothes dryer motor that has shafts at both ends. It can handle 30 inch or 36 inch long belts on the right hand side. On the left side I can install a drill chuck adapter for wire wheels, etc., or I can install a cone-shaped threaded adapter for attaching the buffing and polishing wheels like the ones that jewelers use.
Even though I have covered the motor, I do blow the dust and crud out of it every 10 years or so.
