How To Keep Time With The Hi-Hat Foot in Grooves and Fills (From Scratch to Advanced)

Keeping Time with the Hi-Hat whilst playing grooves and fills may be one of the most important things a drummer can do. It is the signal post to both your band, and the audience, for the pulse. Whilst you might not want to do it in every song, you definitely want to have the capability to do it; particularly during jam sessions, for example, or when another musician is soloing.

As time goes on, this 'physical habit' of tapping your left foot, even if it's just with your heel into the pedal so you don't activate the hi hat, will become your rock for time; the physical representation of your internal clock. You will not always need a physical clutch for this, but a lot of the time you might want one!

In this Video, we learn how to keep time against 16th Notes, 16th Note Triplets, and 32nd Notes i.e. in fills and soloing. We, then, learn how keep time with the hi-hat foot playing downbeats, upbeats, 8th notes, and splash-close(!).
