For British Textile Biennial 2025, the British Council supported a delegation of seven artists, designers, and makers from across Southeast Asia to take part in a roundtable discussion and exchange of practice at The Whitaker Art Gallery, in Rawtenstall on Wednesday 29th October 2025.
All these practitioners are engaged in craft traditions once dismissed as primitive, yet now reimagined as pathways to innovative futures and reclaimed histories —practices that nevertheless remain vulnerable in the face of today’s social and environmental challenges.
The theme of the second panel discussion was "Sustaining Ancestral Cultures Through Textiles" and featured:
Reiz Wahid (UK) - Artist & Weaver
Cheong See Min (Malaysia) - Artist & Weaver
Lucille Junkere (UK) - Artist & Natural Dyer
Marcos Kueh (Malaysia) - Artist
Laurie Peake - Artistic Director, British Textile Biennial
Moderated by Debika Ray - Writer, Editor & Consultant
Creative Lancashire partnered with British Textile Biennial for this event, as part of our Conversations in Creativity sessions. Conversations in Creativity is a series of talks and insightful interviews where creatives from across the disciplines explore how inspiration, often from around the world, informs process.
