The journey from Sankri village to Juda Ka Talab marks the first leg of the enchanting Kedarkantha trek. This stretch, approximately 4 to 5 kilometers long, is an immersive experience that introduces trekkers to the pristine beauty of the Himalayas.
Starting Point: Sankri Village (6,400 ft)
Sankri is a quaint and picturesque village, nestled amidst towering pine forests and overlooking majestic peaks. It serves as the base camp for the Kedarkantha trek. The village exudes a rustic charm, with wooden houses and narrow trails that set the tone for the adventure ahead. After an early breakfast and a quick briefing, trekkers embark on the trail, leaving behind the cozy warmth of Sankri’s lodges.
The Trail
The trek begins on a well-defined path that gradually ascends through dense forests of pine, maple, and oak. The scent of pine fills the air, and the chirping of birds creates a natural symphony. As you walk deeper into the forest, sunlight filters through the canopy, creating magical patterns on the forest floor.
About an hour into the trek, you'll come across small clearings that offer panoramic views of snow-capped peaks like Swargarohini, Bandarpoonch, and Kalanag. These brief pauses in the dense forest allow trekkers to catch their breath while marveling at the grandeur of the mountains.
During the winter months, the trail is often blanketed in snow, transforming the landscape into a winter wonderland. The soft crunch of snow underfoot and the glistening white surroundings make the experience surreal.
Arrival at Juda Ka Talab (9,100 ft)
After 4 to 5 hours of trekking, you reach Juda Ka Talab, a serene and mesmerizing high-altitude lake. This spot is steeped in local folklore, believed to have been formed when Lord Shiva once opened a strand of his hair.
The lake is surrounded by a dense forest of pine and oak trees, which, in winter, are covered in snow, enhancing the magical ambiance. During summer and autumn, the lake reflects the surrounding greenery and blue skies, making it equally captivating.
Juda Ka Talab serves as the first campsite for the trek. The camping ground is located near the lake, with plenty of flat areas for setting up tents. As the evening sets in, trekkers gather around a bonfire, sharing stories, enjoying hot meals, and soaking in the serene atmosphere under a blanket of stars.
