Much before the first world war and the coining of the term science fiction, many writers like Jules Verne and H. G. Wells had started penning down pieces of literature that were fit to be called science-fiction. In 1911, Edgar Rice Burroughs joined the ranks with his story titled Under the Moons of Mars, which depicted a cavalryman of the Confederacy of the United States fighting against the Union of the Northern States. This man, John Carter, found his way into a mysterious cave and sniffed a gas that rendered his physical body immobile, but his astral projection found itself on Mars. On Mars, however, he was alive in another body and was seemingly stronger and more agile because he was accustomed to the stronger gravitational pull of Earth. John Carter partook in several adventures siding with Martians against other Martians. He ultimately got married to a Martian Princess named Dejah Thoris and became the Prince, only to return forcefully to Earth and travel back to Mars at a later point in time. His love affair with Dejah Thoris led to the evolution of a sub-genre in literature called Interplanetary Romance. A prime example of this would be the affair between Marvel’s Star-Lord and Gamora, daughter of Thanos. Despite being a famous pop culture icon of North America and having a backstory and setting worthy of being turned into a film, the appreciation for Edgar Burroughs’s work is long overdue. In this video, we will deep dive into every possible aspect of this legendary hero, who went on to influence several of the mainstream DC and Marvel heroes and also set the stage for interplanetary warfare and cultural exchange. Let’s begin, shall we?
