Couch to Bed Pullout with Drawer Storage in Transit Van Conversion

This was a tough one for sure. When I first started designing the van, all I knew was that I wanted the van to feel as open and free-flowing as possible. This, combined with my height (6'), meant I did not want to do the traditional van life layout of a bed and "garage" taking up the entire rear of the van.

I wanted to be able to move throughout the van from any of the entranceways, the cab, sliding door, or rear doors. Now, at the end of this van build, I can say I am very happy I chose to go down the open layout route even with the sacrifices it entails :) I love my van.

The bed is basically a box with two drawers making up 64" of the bed and then the 16" toilet box making up the last bit to make a total of 80" (since I hate having my head sliding off a bed or my toes hanging off). 25" deep, 80" long, 16 3/4" tall (without cushions).

The drawers pull out and get covered by corresponding pieces that sit behind the couch cushion / bed mattress during the day. The box seat comes out from under the desk and the final back piece fits on top of that to make an 80" long and 47" wide bed!

If I went back, I'd make the desk across from the bed/couch 3" shallower and the bed/couch 3" deeper to make it more comfortable in couch mode.

The mattress is simply a Japanse floor mattress sewn inside a blackout thermal curtain.

I used all 3/4" hardwood ply.

There is also velcro on the bottom of the couch to hold it in place when in couch mode.
