Playthrough of Technōs Japan's 1987 beat 'em up for the Amiga, Double Dragon.
Double Dragon, originally an arcade hit by Technōs Japan in 1987, made its way to the Amiga, bringing its side-scrolling beat 'em up action to home computers. The game casts players as Billy Lee (or his brother Jimmy in two-player mode), a martial artist on a mission to rescue his girlfriend Marian from the clutches of the Black Warriors gang. This quest takes players through a variety of urban environments, from gritty city streets and back alleys to industrial areas and even a forest.
The gameplay in Double Dragon revolves around hand-to-hand combat against waves of enemies. Players can utilize a variety of punches, kicks, and throws to dispatch their foes. A key element of the game is the ability to pick up and use weapons, such as baseball bats, knives, and whips, adding another layer of strategic combat. As players progress, they can also learn new fighting techniques, expanding their repertoire of moves and increasing their effectiveness against tougher enemies.
The Amiga version of Double Dragon aimed to replicate the arcade experience, with detailed sprites and backgrounds that captured the gritty atmosphere of the game. While some minor graphical and audio compromises were made due to the Amiga's hardware limitations compared to the arcade original, the core gameplay and challenge remained intact. This conversion allowed Amiga owners to experience the iconic beat 'em up action that made Double Dragon a classic in the genre.
