A couple of clarifications with the displacements to three decimal places:
ms440 has 70.684cc Placard reads 71cc
372XPW has 74.697cc Placard reads 75cc
ms461 has 76.452cc Placard reads 77cc
I am talking about piston displacement only.
In the first 30/45 seconds I was kind of yammering on about what these saws have for engine sizes for comparison purposes - small medium & large among the group.
I was also comparing the amount of work done to the saws as well. Both Stihls are in a higher state of tune but the said state is for running a longer bar and having more lowend grunt. Not necessarily for a cookie cutting affair like what you would see in the Husqvarna.
I'm well pleased at how the 372 runs for sure considering it is down about a level and a half on the 440 while not getting to embarrassed. But, it is up 4cc for the most part in displacement. I've said for years that 3cc in a piston port chainsaw engine is a BIG deal.
We took a look at the elevation of the stops too. Somewhere ~ .050
Timed runs as follows:
ms440 at 13,740 8.67 dwn ~ 7,800 and 8.69 ~ 8640 up
XPW at 13,560 9.35 dwn ~ 10920 and 9.00 ~ 10920 up
ms461 at 13,560 8.16 dwn ~ 9120 and 7.56 ~ 11520 up
Now we have to consider the tach readings on the XPW being the same. I have instructed my "assistant" on the tach operation. It's possible the reset button did not get pushed correctly. I could hear it run a little higher on the pipe until getting around the 1/2 way mark in the video.
I also think that the high reading on the 461 came at a time where there was less load which was allowing the engine to spin up a bit.
We need to keep in mine that this tach only shows the max rpm number in the session.
I'm currently available for custom saw modifications. Please shoot me an email if you are interested.
