He was known as "The impetuous youth actor of Seventies" and made history as the first teledrama actor in Sri Lanka with the role of Jayasena in Sri Lanka's first teledrama "Dimuthu Muthu" in 1983.
He went beyond the tradition of Sinhala cinema's role of lover and entered the cinema as a revolutionary actor in 1969 with the movie "Rayak Dawalat". He acted in the movies "Hantane Kathawa", "Akkara Paha", "Nim Walalla" and got the highest popularity with his performance in the movie "Ahas Gauva".He was an unforgettable character in Sinhala cinema. For that excellence, he was honored with the U.W. Sumathipala Memorial Award in 2016. As Sumathi, we honor the memory of the late Mr. Amarasiri Kalangsooriya, an award-winning senior film and TV actor, who passed away in April 2023 on the occasion of his birthday commemoration.
